10/14/10 Commission Candidate Debate

The commission candidates were each asked the following questions:

Opening statements

1.  Upon being elected, what are the first 2 action items you would address and why?

Follow up:  How would you accomplish the two items you have identified?

2.   In searching for a new city manager, what qualities and qualifications would
you look for in a candidate, what costs in terms of time and expense would you find acceptable, and what salary range would you recommend?

Follow up:  What are your expectations of the length of time a city manager should
remain committed to North Port before considering other opportunities, and how would
you be proactive in protecting the city from unnecessary costs in the event of his or her
   early departure?

3.    What is your plan to improve the roads if the referendum were to fail?

Follow up:  What impact do you believe this will have on the city's economic
   development?

4.    We have heard this year that balancing the budget will require either raising taxes
or reducing services.  What we haven't really heard anyone talking about is the third
strategy of generating revenue.  Do you feel this is a valid strategy and, if so, how
would you propose to generate revenue for the city?

5.    What plans do you have to bring businesses and jobs to North Port?

Follow up:  What role would you specifically play in the process?

6.       What experience have you had being involved with the community during your tenure in North Port and what did you learn about the community's needs and resources from that involvement?

Follow up:  Would you support long term contracts with vendors (meaning 30 years)?

Follow up:  How do you balance the importance of elements that make up the quality of life in North Port with the expenses involved in acquiring and maintaining them?

7.       North Port has many historically unique natural and cultural sites, including beautiful parks and natural springs, some over ten thousand years old.  How important do you think these sites are and what would you be willing to do to partner with other private and public entities in the protection and management of these sites while capitalizing on their uniqueness and the special opportunities that they can provide for our citizens?

Follow up:  Would you support long term contracts with vendors (meaning 30 years)?

8. What is the toughest decision you have ever made, and how do you feel about it now?
